Ken,

According to Lindsay Porter's "MG Midget @ AH Sprite" book, the Spridgets
with the rounded wheel wells are heavier than those with square wheel
wells.
To keep from losing some of the structural integtrity when going from
square to rounded wheel well, MG/AH had to put in some extra support(s) for
the Spridgets. This extra support ended up equating to extra weight.
The main advantage to the rounded wheel well is the option of using
slightly oversize tires. I'm running 155/80R13, which is about as large as
one can go in the sqaure wheel wells.
Notice that in 1975, MG went back to square wheel wells on the Midget.
Guess they never did figure out a light-weight soloution to the structural
problems of rounded wheel wells.
>I'm
>aware that the 1967 Sprite had a detuned Mini Cooper engine in it, but I
>don't know how that differs from the later 1275.
I wasn't aware of any changes in the 1275 engines except for the possible
addition of emission control garbage, which my '66 Midget (1098) is free
of.
Take care.
