Last night my MGB suddenly lost most of the clutch and it makes rubbing
noises and the engine labors a bit when I apply the clutch.
Once I get the car in gear the clutch remains engaged and doesn't
slip. This leads me to conclude that the bearing part of the throw-out
bearing is no longer functioning and probably doesn't exist :-)
If anyone has another idea/experience though I would love to hear it.
I would like to replace the throw-out bearing with something made from
brass instead of graphite. Does such a beast exist?
Since I have to take the transmission out anyway I want to go ahead and
either put in a rebuilt transmission or replace the layshaft and
laygear (my first and reverse gears don't really work anymore). I have
been quoted $700 for the two gears from Atlanta Import Auto Part here
in Atlanta whereas a rebuilt transmission is only about $450 so it
makes more sense to go with the rebuilt transmission. The problems are
that:
1. My transmission has an overdrive which I definantly will NOT give up.
(it's loud enough WITH the overdrive)
2. My transmission has the larger layshaft axel with more bearings which
I would like to keep as well.
The option I would prefer would be to rebuild my own transmission if I
could fine someone that makes or refurbishes the gears from the MGB
transmission for a more down to earth fee? Any ideas from netland?
