Well, I managed to pull out and strip my Stag engine over the holidays.
The engine had about 22K miles on it when it blew a head gasket around
5 years ago. The engine has been partly dismantled in the car ever
since. Now it's out and stripped. Bad news though - there was all
kinds of sludge in the oil pan and the oil pump intake screen was pretty
blocked. Ick. The bottom bearing shells looked fine - but the top ones were
all showing copper :-( This might have happened when the oil thinned out.
The crank might need grinding - there's a few noticeable grooves in it.
The bores look ok, though.
Now I have to find a good machine shop (the one I used to use closed up).
Anyone have any tips on a shop around the Detroit area?
The way this car is put together boggles the mind. You have to take
everything out to get to anything (eg you have to take the muffler
system out to get the drive shaft out to remove the engine. You have
to drain the oil out of the automatic trans before pulling the engine since
the drive shaft runs directly on the splined output shaft of the trans and,
if you remove it, all of the oil will drain out the back, etc ...)
I used up a lot of oil-dry pulling the engine :-)
