Ah, the Vanwall! Along with the 250F, the most beautiful GP car
(body by Costin) ever built. Dennis Jenkinson's book on its
development is worth seeking out. A slight correction, John - the
bearings were pioneered by Tony Vandervell on a 4.5 litre GP Ferrari
known as the "Thinwall Special" - hence the "wall" in Vanwall (Van
from the boss, of course, as you say).
Vanwall also built a car for their executives (and the press) to
play with in the late 60's. They had Lotus modify the body and
chassis of 47 (racing version of the Europa) to take a Rover V8. The
car was modified with all sorts of GKN and Vanwall custom goodies to
show off what they can do. The result was GKN-47D, a street car with
a top speed of 160+ MPH.
