My 77 MGB had the same fail to shut off the engine problem. It was the
ignition switch. Check to see if when you turn the switch power to the
coil turns on and off. A replacement can be had for around $40.
Speaking of odd electrical problems, My B had a doozy last year. Every
time you turned the headlamps on the starter would engage, wether the
engine was running or not!. What a nasty sound having your engine trying
to run at 900rpm and the starter trying to turn it much slower. I hope I
never hear that noise again.
