Jim,
I've known & occasionally dwelt with Wayne off & on for years. There is a way
to deal with him and a way NOT to deal with him.
Proper way:
Shop around for what you need everywhere but Triumphs Only. Take your best
price to him. "I'm looking for a left handed screwdriver. I can get it from
Acme tools for left handed Ltd, for XYZ dollars. How much would it cost from
you?" The answer is alomst always some dollars less than XYZ. The more things
you throw into an order the cheaper he can discount it.
The Wrong way:
Go to Wayne and say "I need a left hand screw driver. You got one? How much?"
Wayne will charge as much as he thinks he can get.
If Wayne finds something he thinks is rare, he will ask top dollar plus & hang
onto it until someone wants it bad enough (he needs to eat too).
He once built up a black TR3 out of various TR3 parts. It was a project for his
employees when he otherwise didn't have things for them to do. I dropped by
several times while this was being built. There were probably close to a dozen
TRs that donated parts to this project (I'm always happy to see a new TR3 on the
road, esp one reserected out of parts). The only part of this project that
bothered me is that he was representing it as a restored car with matching
numbers. He had a commision plate stamped with the engine number so the car
would have matching numbers. He failed to note that TR commission numbers do
not match engine numbers and he may have registered the only TR3 in the world
whose commission number ended in 'E' (Commission numbers end in 'L' Left hand
drive, or 'R' right hand drive and had an 'O' after the L or R if an overdrive
was fitted from the factory. The number on the engine ends with an 'E' for
engine).
I hope you have a good working relationship with Wayne. He is certinly worth
working with when you know how, stay away from rare items, and know what you are
buying.
