In the May 1993 issue of the British Magazine entitled Practical Classics
there is an article entitled 'Stop the Rot' covering rust killers, anti-
rust primers and waxes. The products were tested by applying them to
mild steel plates which were left outdoors for 2 months until rust
started to pit the metal. For tests the waxes (Waxoyl among them) half
the plate was cleaned back to shiny metal before applying the waxes in 2
heavy coats 24 hours apart. The plates were scored down to bare metal
then left outdoors and sprayed once or twice weekly with a 5% salt
solution. The author commented that he was pleased with Waxoyl in the
past but was disappointed in how it did in comparison to the other
products, noting that it didn't have good creeping properties unless
thinned and that it seemed to be temperature sensitive. The rating order
from best to worst is Dinitrol 3125 and Dinitrol 3654 (tied for 1st),
Dinol RC 800, Tectyl ML and Tectyl 506 (tied for 4th), Waxoyl and then
Eastwoood Heavy Duty Anti Rust. The better products 'healed' over at the
score and were rust free with the lower rated ones having rust break
through up to 50% of the surface.
