Classic problem. The starter motor is so hot that it's binding. You may want
to ensure that your cable connections are clean and tight to the battery,
solenoid, starter and ground, too. Can you improvise a heat shield of some
sort to protect the starter from the exhaust?

I haven't had the pleasure of troubleshooting a 3-wire flasher, but I'd first
want to be sure that it's the flasher unit at fault here: see which wire is
hot at the socket, jumper it to one of the other wires and see what bulbs
light. (Move the turn signal lever to both sides during the test, too.) If
you cannot get any bulbs to light with a jumper wire in the flasher socket,
the problem lies elsewhere and you'd better report back to us.  ;-)
