Every race car I have put together, has evenmtually weighed more that the
original car did, (without going to extremes and using fibre-glass - exotix
metals etc).
Indeed one strips the interior of the car but then adds the following :
- A full roll-cage = VERY heavy
- skid-plates = VERY heavy,
- Mud-flaps and underbody protection = heavy
- roll-bar padding
- Distance/time computer
- CB radio
- 4 or 6 Cibie lights
- Backup wiring for lights/ignition
- Spare tyre
- Tool box
etc etc. - as you've guessed I do Pro-rallyng !!!
In the book "BMC Competetion History"(?), they always found that after
preparing the Mini's, MGB's and Austin 1800, they weight of the car
was greater than the stock model - even with all the alloy panels etc.
If your prepared a car for the track/autocross, the addition of a roll-cage
does not lighten the car even with all the essentials removed.
Admitadly in autocross you only need a roll-bar so you do
save some weight. I think when I had my roll-cage built - it ordered
50 feet of tubing.
I am having a cage built for the Midget in Jan - so I shall find out
the weight before and after - because in a Midget, there really is not a lot
you can remove to save weight.
