In the sixties Triumph built several Le Man Spitfires with a fastback
roof.
This car did well in its race category and lead to the
development of a coupe.
This design eventually became the GT6. The 6 cylinder engine
was used and the
suspension/brakes/transmission uprated to take the extra strain.

I can't let this go by. Despite this persistent story and even the
advertising of the day ("GT6, from LeMans to your corner Triumph
dealer", the GT6 didn't come from the LeMans Spitfire fastbacks; it's
the other way around. The GT6 was already in prototype form whem the
competitions department got the idea to use a similar aerodynamic
device for LeMans and the rally cars.

There was also a prototype GT6 LeMans car, the GT6R, but the works ran
out of competition money before it made it to the track. Too bad.
