I was just flipping through the Nov. 9th Autoweek and found an item
about this video of the 1991 La Carrera Panamericana done by Pink Floyd.
Has anyone seen it? Darren, do you and your Bugeye appear in it?
>>Unfortunately no, as the Bugeye is not "legal" for
the PanAm, and so I'm relegated to the Classic. The
main, and perhaps the only rule for competing in the
PanAm is that a model of your car have been produced
prior to 1954, and I could only stretch the Sprite's
lineage back to '58. That's why Jeff & I have been looking
for a Morris Minor .... ;-)
The article said it was a good music video with some good footage of
vintage racers, but the documentary aspects were lousy. It's 65 minutes
long and is available at record and video stores or Sony Music Video
Enterprises, P.O. Box 4450, New York, N.Y., 10101-4450.
>>I ran out and bought it a few minutes after it came
out & I'd have to agree with Autoweek's comments. For
pure entertainment it's a kick; great music, very nice
race footage of a variety of the cars, and the best
part to me, was some newsreel footage from the original
races showing a few of the terrible accidents that led
to the cancellation of the event after the '54.
What is missing is accurate details about the
original events. For example, one of the guys asks who
were some of the big factory teams running and they
completely leave out Lincoln, who was by far the most
serious effort. Ask me sometime .....
I guess the guys from the band wrecked one of the two Jag C-type replicas
they were running, breaking the band manager's leg in the process.
>>This was just one of the 1991 accidents featured, my
favorite (if that's not too morbid to say), was a
spliced in video-cam footage of another C-type replica
locking up the wheels and going straight off a
troublesome corner into a tree. No-one hurt.
For $20, I thought it a good deal. If any any locals
want to have a movie night, I'd be happy to bring this
+ any of the other stuff we've got.
cheers-
