John D. Barlow writes;

I have a friend with a (series 3 ?) MG midget (1973/1974?) It
has the 1275 cc engine.

The gearbox on it has "spat the dummy" (at least, first gear is
horrific). He has been told it will cost him about AUS$1,600 to
get a replacement (apparently the layshaft is unavailable). are
     there cheaper gearboxes available from
the US or England ?
     >>Should be. Mini-Mania advertises rebuilt "gold seal"
ribcase trannys from time to time for about $800.

Can he get a gearbox with syncro on first ?
     >>Not an original ribcase.

What is desired is a reconditioned
(or new) gearbox, rather than second hand, but any prices that you
know of will be greatfully accepted.
     >>Just FYI, I had mine rebuilt a few years back, parts
& labor (minus input gear) was $500.

PS: originality isn't a must on this car - its too run down :-)

     >>Then go with a 5spd trans out of a Datsun 210 (not a
B210) sedan. full synchro, O/D, and much sturdier.
There are several places that offer kits to do this,
for about 1K, parts included. Please reply if you're
interested & I bring the address in.

     >>FYI, someone replied w/a rebuilt 1500 tranny; this
will not fit the 1275 engine. Different beasts
     altogether.

          cheers-
