Hi All,
I have started having a problem with my '79 Spitfire 1500 and was hoping to
get some suggestions from the group on what to look for.
The problem is that the car is stalling. There is no warning, I'm just
running along and then the engine quits (fortunately when it happened last
night I had just turned into my driveway). Upon trying to restart it, the
engine cranks fine, but doesn't start.
It is acting like it did a few years ago when I needed a new fuel pump, but
when I disconnected the fuel line from the carburetor and cranked the
engine, gas came squirting out. Is it possible to tell if I'm not getting
enough gas to keep the carburetor bowl full?
After checking the gas flow, I checked the connections from the ignition
coil to the distributor. Everything seemed good and snug. When I then
tried it started with no problem. It had, however, been sitting for
several hours and the engine had cooled.
This morning, it started just fine, but after about 5 minutes while
driving to work it quit again. It still seems to be getting gas, but I
couldn't be sure as I didn't have any tools to unclamp the gas lines,
fiddling with the electrical connection did not correct the problem, but
after sitting for a while it started up again and got me back home.
I plan to replace the gas filter to ensure that it isn't clogged (it's a
couple of years old). What else can I check? Is it possible that the
ignition coil is going bad? Any way to check it?
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Tom
