Yup, used it all the time in England.  "Swarf" is applicable to any
black, oily, greasy crud found on many machines.

Garry's Mother:  "Argh!  Look at all that swarf all o'er yer!!!  Bloody 'ell!"

(Garry used to go playing on all the bulldozers, excavators, dumpers and other
assorted machinery in the local quarries when he was a kid...)
