I know this is really reaching, but seeing as how everything has been
tried to no avail on this car, I thought I'd throw this in and see if it makes
any sense. I know that backpressure in the exhaust can directly affect what
goes on in the chamber. Is is possible that when the exhast was knocked off of
this car that the backpressure dropped, and the mixture ran lean for awhile? I
f so, could the car have possibly received some small but significant amount of
valve damage? The damage may be enough to cause the cantankerous behavior, but
not enough to be readily seen when the head gasket was replaced, especially if
not being looked for.
One other idea on the same train of thought. If it was running lean,
and therefore hot, could it be possible that there was some local warpage of
the
head that only shows up afetr being warmed up?
Just some way-out theories.....
