Next time tell them instead of the Honda they should buy a Hyundai(sp?).
They do in fact come with a Maintenance Fairy. I share your thoughts
about the abuse one puts their car through and then expect it to
continue to run. I no longer work on anyones cars for that very reason.
I give tips and hints but never do I actually pick up a wrench and turn
it. In fact I rarely even take a look at the car, especially if I know
the person that is having the problem. My experience is once you have
worked on someones car and fix it you become their main mechanic. I'm
sorry I program computers for a living now, not turn wrenches.
I work on my cars either because they need it, or because it is
time for some PM. Although I will stop and help old folks and women.
I may be showing my age, but when I was growing up my Dad would not let
me even get a car without knowing how to do tune-ups, change oil, brakes
and most other trivial type things. Then I got hired by San Bernadino
County to do maintenance on their vehicles while in high school. So I
have no pity on a GUY who has not one clue why HIS car will not run
right, or at all.
My wife even knows how to do tune-ups, oil changes and the like, her Dad
had the same rules that my Dad had.
I too am sorry for the bandwidth, in fact I think there must be
something in the air here I have been in a very foul mood this week.
