MGB Transmission question

Can anybody recommend a method[s] for determing the condition of 
my MGBs transmission while it's out of the car.  I didn't
get a chance to drive the car (because it didn't run) before taking 
it out so I have no idea what condition it's in.  

I'd hate to put it back and discover it's no good.  


Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
