Caroll(sp) Shelby and the AC Cobra have been making the news a lot
lately, or so it seems.
There's a new upscale [British] magazine out called Car Classics.
It's mission is to stay away from the mass produced MGs, Triumphs,
and such and focus on the exotic, or unique.
The second issue had a revue of a 289 MK II cobra (6?),
a brief history of competition Cobras, and a one page story
on Shelby. Very interesting reading. I recommend it. Shelby says
his favorite all time car (in this article anyway) is the 289
Cobra (MK?, sorry).
The article also said something like "...it [the car he developed]
could easily have been a Cheverolet powered Aston, given Shelby's
connections". Apparently Shelby is "amused" by the fact that his
cars are so valuable today but feels contempt for the kit
cars using the Cobra name.
On another Cobra note, the April 1992 Classic And Sportscar
picked the AC Cobra 427 as one of its top ten worst cars.
"Ugly, pumped-up looks, ridiculous performance, clumsy gearchange and
brutal road manners. Totally needless compared with the desirable 289".
Very interesting, this Cobra phenomenon. To bad the whole thing went
hayware and the Cobra is no longer an affordable sports car.
