In the course of rebuilding every system in my 1967 MGB in have finally reached
the pleasant state of affairs where the most pressing mechanical problem is
changing the differential oil. (Can you tell I am looking for excuses to keep
from sanding and painting it?) Based on the state everything else was in, I
doubt anyone ever changed the differential oil. I would like to but so far the
info I've gotten has been pretty unuseful. The Hayes manual says to use SAE
90EP
and the Clymer manual says to use Castrol Hypoid B90.
I finally found some 85-90 oil at PEP Boys, but the castrol is Hypoid
85-90W C instead of Hypoid 90B and no one seems to have a clue what the
SAE 90EP was. The PEP Boys "oil manual" didn't list the MGB (big
surprise). I would like the differential to last for at least another
100,000 miles so the right oil is probably a good place to start?
Anyone out there have a suggestion?
The gearbox oil seemed to be primarily concerned with whether or not it met with
some API or whatever standard?
And back to the paint... Anyone ever use urethane paint? I saw some
used to repair some scratches on a late model car and have decided to
hell with acrylic enamel. I know it's isosonic [sp?] and "proper"
ventilation is "recommended." Any other potentially lethal considerations?
How about suggested brands?
