A number of folks have mentioned the trick about using lifting eyes on
the rocker cover studs. I seem to recall that this is also what the
workshop manuals say. However, you need to exercise some care here. A
looong time ago I did this on a TR4 engine. You better make sure that
the studs and nuts are in good shape AND the holes are ok. Don't overtorque
them and DON'T jerk the engine. Any major impulse can strip the thread
right off the stud (or nut) leaving you with a very immediate problem.
Fortunately for me, no body parts were trapped when the engine returned
to it's bay. Me, I'm a lot happier when I see 1/4" plates bolted to
the side of the engine :-) (you'll note that most of these have 2 or 3
bolts and the stress is applied across the diameter of the bolt, not
along the threads) If I don't have lifting plates, I'll loop a chain or
5/16 aircraft cable around the block. I just don't trust 1 or 2 5/16
(or 1/4) bolts to hold up four or five hundred pounds.
BTW, anybody know of a cheap source for those bullet connectors? I know
TRF and VB carry them, but they seem a bit expensive for such a teensy
bit of metal.
