The CA DMV doesn't give a crap what engine you put in your car, but the smog
police do. Like Jim says, the car has to conform to the model year of the car.
There used to be a loophole in the smog law so you could put an older engine in
a newer car and the car would comply to the ENGINE year. So if you put a '64
motor in an '85 car it was technically exempt from smog tests. They got wise
several years back and changed the law. Oh well, at least it worked for a
little while.
