It is probably worn ring and pinion gears. Unfortunately, this is not
that easy to fix. The gears are a little steep in price (~$250). There
are some shims between the pinion gear and the main bearing that basically
line up the teeth on the ring and pinion gears. Too much or too little
shimming can cause more whining than you had to begin with. The Bentley
manual gives detailed instructions if you want more details, but the
long and the short of it is this is not just a Remove and Replace job.
If it was my diff, I would either look for a good used one or grit my
teeth and endure the noise until I had the $$$ for a professionally rebuilt
one.

This is probably a bad u-joint on the axle shaft. If you are going to
replace it, go ahead and do the other side as well.

Good luck,
