Close, but not quite. The GT6 hit the market in '66 with a 2 liter motor,
which was a stoked version of the Vitesse's 1600, which was a Herald/Spitfire
motor design stretched to fit two more cylinders. When the 2.5 liter version
came out in the TR5/250, it was a longer stroke version of the GT6/Vitesse
unit, and in fact using the same block as the 2 liter. This may be where the
2.5 liter GT6 rumor started. The 2.5 liter ended up getting its own block
with increased clearance for the crank throws cast into it.
