It's got to be possible. There are a couple of conversions
that use Datsun 1200/210 transmissions in Spridgets, which have a
very narrow transmission tunnel -- too narrow to use the Laycock
overdrive. I've seen a couple of Sprites that had the Datsun
transmission installed, and they didn't require cutting the tunnel.
The issues are finding a bellhousing adaptor plate that has holes
in the engine's pattern and holes in the tranny's pattern, then
getting the engine mounts and input shaft to line up.
I was considering this for the '74 Midget I used to have, when
first gear went out on it. I seem to remember -- and this was
five years ago, so adjust the prices by a fudge factor as well
as an inflation factor -- that it was going to cost about $300
for the conversion parts, plus a Datsun transmission, plus the
installation. I ended up putting in a factory rebuilt tranny.
