A couple of weeks ago Dennis Wilson gave some good advice about how to
select the correct SU needle for a modified application. I have followed
most of his recommended steps in the past, including using the services of
a good rolling road technician [not always easy to find] and installing
the K&N exhaust sensor [very helpful].

The biggest headache (well, the most annoying, anyway, because it's so
trivial) is locating a trial needle from the horrible jumbled-up
SU needle charts. They have no logical order.

What I have done is to write a database of the needles (both .090 and .100
jet sizes, fixed and floating) and a set of programs to run on an IBM PC
or compatible. The programs will do things like find a needle that is
a specified amount richer/leaner than the baseline needle; compare the
profiles of specified needles;  translate .090 needles to .100 equivalents;
etc.

I have used these programs successfully on a couple of PCs (an IBM and
a clone). What I'd like to do now is offer them to someone here on the
mailing list to try out and offer corrections and suggestions. I would
like to find someone who (1) has some experience with PCs, so that if
there are language or compatibility problems we can work them out long
distance, and (2) has a current need to tune an SU application, so that
the usefulness of the programs can be tested. Note that this is only
one of the necessary tools! You'll still need some sort of diagnostic
capability, and you'll still have to do the wrenching. All I can provide
is an easier way to sort through those lousy tables.

I'd like to limit this to one or two people to begin with, so that any
problems can be caught before they propagate very far. Please email me
if you're interested.

Thanks --
