Well after installing the new clutch kit, I set out on replacing the kingpins
(and BTW I missed named them, the haynes manual calls them swivel pins).
I got everything out replaced the A-arm bushings with those new fangled
nylatron bushings, after seeing the MGB GT style I think I like these
type better. No fuss no muss, and I've been told that they work great
and last a long time. As to the outer bush's the left (driver) side, was
a RMF, heating it beating it with a 3# sledge hammer, using a good
penetrating oil (S'OK which BTW is the best darn stuff I have ever used,
it was reccomended by the MG expert at Van's here in Austin (Burnet Rd
for Austinites) 'better than Liquid Wrench, WD40, or anthing else he had
ever used'. Comes in a green can with a big clover leaf on it.) all of
this to no avail. What I ended up doing was cutting the bolt and bush off
with a hacksaw, making darn sure I didn't damage the wishbone. The right side
was a charm compared with the left side.
After the removal of said kingpins and offending parts I set out to push
the old bush's out as Jerry suggested with the appropriate nuts bols and
sockets, well i heated, soaked, soaked and heated those things to no
avail they just were not budging, so as I am writing this the wife has
dropped them off at a local garage that I have a working relationship
with and they said they would press the old ones out and ream them to
fit for me, all for a whopping $40 :) After all the trouble I had it is
worth the $$.
On another note on a totallay different subject. Has anyone had
experience with replacing a single lifter? While I had the engine out, I
was doing a cursory inspection at everything I could sink my eyeballs
into. After removing the side covers on the engine I found a very
disturbing thing. The intake lifter for cylinder 4 had a broken collar
on it. Supposedly at the first of the year there was a valve job done on
this thing, and I personally would have thought that that would have
been one area they would have checked, but then again I'm no genius.
What I planned on doing was to replace it with a used one with a wear
pattern in it already, I would think that putting a new one in it would
flatten the cam. May the same may be true with a used one also? The
reason for putting a used one is I will hopefully be able to rebuild the
engine this winter.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated :)
