The head was a BITCH to get off.

I'll pass along (again) the tip I learned here from Aran Guy a while
ago: hemp rope. Sounds crazy, but I think I made a couple of converts
in a parking lot in Kentucky this past summer...

Fill one of the cylinders with HEMP (it must be hemp, nylon will not do
because it won't compress) rope and turn the engine over with the
starter. If you're really stuck, do it to two cylinders that will be up
at the same time.

Oh, you probably want to make sure that the cylinders you're stuffing
rope in are on the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke, or you
may bend a valve (Bob, Roger, did we check this or get lucky?)

Regarding your proposed mods, you will find many of the answers in
either the Bentley's manual (Haynes, yuck, fooey) and the Competition
Preparation Manual, both available from TRF.

Performance Engineering Ltd (503) 746-9714 is hawking some new
"Ultimate Valve Guide" with a "limited warranty". I don't know anything
about them, but it might be worth calling and finding out -- anyone
used these? They're made of "Anti-Seize Manganese-Bronze".
