Mufflers

I recently took the muffler off of my 1980 Spit 1500 in an effort
to remove the header and found things were rattling in it. On
shaking some of it out from the pipe I saw that these were ball'ish
looking objects and of course black in colour. Does anyone know what
this stuff? Is it toxic by any chance? If it is what is the proper
way of disposing off it? I wouldn`t want rain to make it end up in
the drainage system. Another question, how does the muffler/silencer
quieten the engine and how do you know when to replace it?
Is there an easy way to get it unclogged if it is somewhat clogged?

On a related topic, I need to remove the headers from the car and
try as I may I have not been able to. The length of the pipe at
the point where all the header pipes meet is a bit too long to angle
it out from the side of the engine. I have cut most of the length off
already but it's no good. If I try to drop it to the ground
by raising the car, it wants the car to be almost vertical. I really
do not want to take the engine out right after I just rebuilt it
and put it in. So what`s the secret of this fine british design.

Please help

best wishes
