Fortified with coffee, I went out this morning to give the damned
spin-on adapter one more try. Using my patented oil filter wrench (a
length of webbed belt), I remove the filter. Find the right socket,
remove the adapter. Inspect the O-ring. Looks well lubricated, seated
properly, not distorted. Inspect the adapter. Hmm. Is that light I see?
Sure enough. There's a bad spot on the casting, bad enough that there
are two small holes through the outer rim. Quality control problems
again.
This last batch of parts may finally teach me to carefully inspect all
the parts I receive before installing them...
