I've recently "bought" a Spit off of a friend of mine. The reason the word
"bought" is in quotes is that its really more of an exchange of services deal.
I'm going to help him put in a couple of Jag interiors, and he's selling me
the car for $200.
Anyway, the car is '73 or '74. It is very ugly, because the paint is bad,
and a lot of the brickabrack from the body is off of it right now (bumpers,
top, lights, etc.). But the rust situation is pretty good (some rot in front
of and behind drivers door, driver's floor pan pretty bad, the rest solid).
The car was a driver a year ago, and seems to be together mechanically, and
my friend says the car runs and all that kind of good stuff. He has all
parts needed to put the car together (it needs some interior stuff, a top,
etc.) and this is all included in the deal.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting this is that Randall just forwarded a message
to me of someone in my area who's selling a GT6 and spare engine. I'm
considering making an offer on just the spare engine, in order to build a
Spit 6. I know that several people on the list have built or considered
building a Spit 6. I remember the one guy saying how he used the GT6 chassis
because its a better conversion. My friend says that the later Spits and
GT6's have the same suspension and chassis as the GT6. Is my '73 or '74 late
enough to have the same chassis? How much should I expect to pay for the
engine, what else would I need? Springs, brakes, transmission, bell housing,
rear end? How much did they change for the 6 cylinder car?
Alternatively, I could leave the car stock, or stick Webers on it. Anybody
have objective (and subjective too for that matter) data on how different mods
stack up against each other. I would guess that its a pretty fair assumption
that the engine swap would be the best, but does the Weber conversion come
close? I wouldn't want to do anything really expensive to this car; probably
a cam or new carburation is the most radical things that I would consider.
