As I have said before, what is a sports car nut to do?
Buy an old one.
It's interesting: I just helped a friend buy a new car. She was driving
an 83 Mazda GLC sedan that had been pretty badly beaten. She was
looking at things like Mazda 626, Acura, Jetta. Finally ended up with a
Hyundai Sonata at quite a reasonable price.
Now, this isn't a bad car -- it's bigger than my Mercedes was, has a/c,
power sunroof, burglar alarm, 2.4 liter engine, overdrive automatic
tranny, fancy stereo. Driving with her is a real trip -- she's clearly
in her element. And I can't understand why anyone would buy such a car
-- I can't see myself ever doing so (not even a Jaguar).
Since buying my 4A, I've rediscovered what driving is about. It's about
experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of my car, the road and
world around me. It's not about isolating myself from the world in a
little cocoon, a miniature replica of my home.
But clearly a lot of people don't feel this way. It all strikes me as pretty
weird.
