Hi all,
I'm having a problem with my charging system that I hope someone will be
able to guide me through. I replaced my battery recently and, after only a
couple of weeks, the new battery was dead. I returned it thinking it was
defective, but, upon testing, it was fine. The place then tested my
charging system and said I had a problem.
I took the car home and used my voltmeter to double check their results.
With the car running, I was getting about 12 volts at both the battery and
the main output of the alternator rather than the 16 volts I should be
getting.
I figured my alternator was bad, so I took it out and went to replace it.
They bench-tested it, and it was putting out 16.5 volts.
Now I figure it has to be the regulator, so I replaced that. The situation
still remains the same; 12 volts (sometimes less) at the battery and the
alternator.
Oh, I also did the test where I disconnect the battery while the car is
running. It stayed running until I turned on the lights when it died.
If anyone could shed any light on this situation, I would be really
grateful. I'm trying to get the car ready to take to the western meet this
fall.
Thanks very much,
Rod
