Fiberglas cars are especially prone to burn up because the bodies are 
combustable. I also have an Avanti and many of those have burned up. Fires in 
the engine compartment shouldn't be hard to put out if you stop the engine 
right away so that the fuel pump doesn't continue to pour gas on the fire and 
smother the fire. It is a good idea to always carry a fire extinguisher. The 
ones that use halon are best. They put the fire out without leaving any 
residue. Some other extinguishers leave a sticky goo over everything.
