The best bicycling rides are the ones you do for free, on your own or with
friends, and they're right in your own "backyard" of Marin county. Like you, I
tried the triathalon thing but it just didn't hold a candle to the hours of
pleasant soltiude riding my bicycle up and down the big scenic peninsula hills
and along the coast.

I wish I could say that for driving. It's still a thrill, but a faster,
noisier and more expensive one.

I thought autocrossing was really expensive relative to other activities, so
rather than buy a new car, I bought a new bike, thinking boy am I being
practical and frugal.

Then I entered three triathlons and one open water swim (from Alcatraz). Total
cost, in entries alone: 415 bucks.

This is what happens when you balance a checkbook and you can see where your
money goes. Don't do it.
