Ummm.... I beg to differ. When I was autocrossing regularly, I found it
very difficult to run better than many similarly prepared cars with
higher horsepower-to-weight ratios.
However, on road courses, I regularly drive around similarly prepared
(suspension/brake wise) cars with *way* more horsepower - cars like
Porsches, Corvettes, Audi S4s, etc. Even at Thunderhill, where there are
two major straights, and another 'straight-like' segment (T6-T9).
Case in point: I drove a friend's 966 Carrera, fitted with chip,
exhaust, H&R coilovers, etc. This a 2900 lb. car with 300+ HP, and it
will top 125 mph on the front straight at Thill. My 635 will not break
110 mph, but my speeds through corners are higher, and I turn faster
times in my car.
On a road course, especially with a lower power car, 'momentum
management' is key.
