Here's my take on the situation. The emergency brake is probably on the
rear wheels (Credit SAAB for front wheel emergency brakes that actually
could stop the car). I've found that when the automakers use the calipers
for emergency brakes too, the linings for those calipers wear out 2-3 X
faster than they otherwise would. I believe that they make the pads much
softer (yet they don't fade in normal service work) to make the "emergency"
brake much more effective. I had a SAAB 900 Turbo that wore out the front
inside pad in 15-30K miles (that was w/ the upgraded pads and boots) and the
rears lasted forever. The Maxima was likewise front drive, but the rear
pads wore out real fast and the fronts lasted. I had a Mazda Protege
(whatever) w/ disk rears, and it's rear pads wore out fast. In each of
those cases, the rear pads were also the parking brake except for the SAAB;
there the fronts were. My current rides have an internal shoe under the
"hat" of the rear disk. Those rear disk pads seem to be lasting forever :-)
