This reminds me of the first time (about a hundred years ago) that I
autocrossed my diesel Rabbit, way back when it was still in EStock and I
still lived in Glen region. . .

Being fairly new to the sport, and absolutely new to the car, I didn't even
think about the fact that, instead of lap belts, the engineers at VW had
decided to use a really-thick foam pad on the dashboard to keep me from
sliding forward. A shoulder belt, only, was provided to keep me out of the
windshield.

On the first hard left, I was sitting on the brake lever wondering how I was
going to reach the brake pedal!

Needless to say, I bought an aftermarket lap belt before I went on course,
again. ;^)

I will disagree with you on this for one primary reason -- the widespread
use of inertia reel belts in modern cars that do absolutely nothing for you
until the accident has begun to happen. For what we do, you might as well
not be belted in at all.
