I get contacted every so often by a survey company (NPD). So the
latest survey starts asking about various sports, and then leap
into questions about NASCAR. So I copied the two pages that had
some interesting stuff.
First Page:
As part of its commitment to constantly making the sport more
exciting, NASCAR is considering the possibility of changing how
the year-end championship driver is determined.
Under the current system, the year-end championship is decided by
the driver who has the most points at the end of the series.
Currently, points are awarded in every race, regardless of track
or length of event. 175 points are awarded for a first place and
then points given decline in five-, four- or three- point
increments until last place. Bonus points are awarded to drivers
who lead at least one lap during each race and to the driver who
leads the most laps during each race.
Second Page:
One new idea we would like your thoughts on is called "Chase for
the Championship". Please click to the next page and read through
this concept carefully as we would like your comments on it.
Chase for the Championship With "Chase for the Championship", the
points system remains the same as the current system, but the
last 10 races will become a "chase for the championship". Here is
how it could work: With 10 races remaining in the season, the Top
10 drivers at that point are locked in place and are guaranteed a
Top 10 finish for the season. The points for these Top 10 drivers
are then reset to begin a 10-race chase to the championship. For
example, the points leader with 10 races to go in the 2003 season
had 3864 points. Under the proposed system, drivers in positions
2-10 would move up to 3864 points as well. This will be the start
of the "Chase for the Championship." Drivers in positions 11 and
lower with 10 races to go in the season will continue to race and
earn points under the current system. They will finish in
positions 11 and lower for the season.
>From there it was questions about what I thought of that, etc.
rate 1-5, agree-disagree, do I know who one this year (Kenseth,
right?), was last year's battle better than this year.
