In the Chrysler design (used in their experimental turbine cars
of the '60s), the turbine has two stages that are not
mechanically linked to each other. The first stage is on a common
shaft with the compressor fan and serves to keep the fire lit, so
to speak. The second stage is linked via reduction gearing to the
drive wheels.
