IIRC, the points were multiplied by a factor of 1.5, not doubled, with any
fractional numbers that resulted rounded up. It did make the Pro Finale
more interesting, because it allowed the possibility of taking a class win
for the year even if you came into the Finale placed lower than first or
second in class, which is virtually impossible with the present point system.
I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind originally setting it up that way,
and I don't know why it was changed, but the old system did allow a driver
the opportunity to overcome the situation of his class being "softer" in one
region of the country than another by winning his class at the Finale.
