The Miata in DP weighs 1775 (1.6) or 1875 (1.8). I do not recall precisely
the proposal for it to go to AP, but at a different weight formula that
would have it at 16xx something IIRC.
It's an overdog in DP, but needs a good home where it can be competitive. It
is too important a car (popular model, lots of 'em out there).
Picking up on Don's analysis above -- the Miata that won (and won last year
too) is about the best-prepped of the bunch, but still has room for more.
The one in 5th is a road racing car that ran at its road racing weight,
about 200# heavy by our book.
The DP-winning Miata was half a second behind the Tiger that won AP, and .2
ahead of the Corvette that won AP last year. The Tiger had two drivers, BTW,
so the Miata also beat one of the two Tiger drivers. Comparisons are a
little fuzzy because DP was the only class that ran in the relatively hotter
weather of Tuesday-Wednesday (all other P classes ran Thursday-Friday). Time
of day is a wash, both AP and DP were Heat 3 classes; both APL and DPL were
heat 1.
Also, if the three DPL Miatas had gone to APL, they would have had a
five-car class, two trophies won by the two DPL trophy winners and by a
bunch! In fact, the Miata that was 5th DPL would have been third in APL --
and that one (which was 10th in DP) has basically a bone-stock engine.
Miata in AP seems like a pretty good fit to me.
And I like it moving outta DP where it is really not a good fit.
