Prior to 1983, Alabama didn't have a title law for motor
vehicles. Ergo, you can get a tag and registration for anything
pre-'83 if you have the keys. Made for some profitable "body
shop" operations around Heflin, AL (right on the GA state line)
back in the 70s. ;<)

There was a brief blurb in R&T in the mid-70s about a
street-driven 917 (you read that right) in Germany. The owner had
tried without success to get the car registered in every country
in Western Europe, and he finally resorted to getting US
registration. There was a photo of the tag on the car (I've still
got the magazine somewhere), and it was an Alabama tag with a 61
(Talladega County) prefix. Interesting, huh?
