Better yet, an acetylene torch will do it in 20 seconds, then

I really don't want to take a torch to the body of the struts. At least not
long enough to cut the original spring perches off anyway. I'll make due
with a grinder of some sort.
I'd consider a few spot welds around the body to keep the threaded sleeves
in place but certainly not a continuous bead of weld. Too much heat while
there's still all the delicate innards inside the strut bodies.
I may be way off base here but better safe than sorry in my pocket book.
