Which tires for auto-x? <BMW E36>

What's the current thinking on tires?  My R1's (my first set of race tires)
were fine, but they are corded.
My car is a 1993 BMW 325i, completely stock, with factory sport suspension.
Wheel size: 15x7.  Tire size: 225/50x15.  I want to stay in stock class, so
I can't change wheel size.
I am only an average driver, and usually run around the median on an overall
PAX basis in SSCA, SFR local events.  I read once that the best tire for an
average driver is not necessarily the best tire for a top driver.
