My Dad's family moved to the West End of Saint Paul in the 1920's. There
was a severe shortage of French-Canadians there, as the place was overrun
with Italians and Irish. (One of the Irish became my Mom, but that was
after the war. I'm not THAT old.) Anywho, with only English and Italian
spoken by the kids my Dad hung with, he saw no reason to pick up on his
family's ancestral language. After the war, Hugo, Centerville, and Little
Canada became overrun with English-speaking folks from the big city. So,
although we French were here before other Europeans, the language and
culture is rare as rare as hotdish in gator country. We still make bouya
hereabouts, even though none of know how to spell it. We just know that you
can't make it in quantities of less than ten gallons and it must be stirred
with a canoe paddle.
