Correct. The rule states "All helmets meeting the current or two
immediately preceeding Snell Foundation Standards (SA or M) are
acceptable". At first glance this would make it appear that Snell85
helmets are not legal for the 2000 year (2000, 1995, 1990). But because
Snell has announced that their new standard will not be available untill
very late in the year 2000, there is a wrinkle. Becasue they (snell 2000
helmets) are not avaialable near the start of the year, they are not
valid during the time they are not available. This means, in fewer
words, that the Snell95 helmets are the most current standards available
for the 2000 year. As such, the Snell85 helmets are still legal for the
2000 year. "But what if the Snell00 standards come out in September?"
you ask? Yeah, if you stick to the letter of the rule, everyone has to
have 90, 95, or 00 lids for Nationals. I thought this too, and asked the
National office. The response was, "yes, we're aware of that, and as a
result, 85 helmets will be legal through the 00 year.". This apparently
was discussed amoung the SEB and the same decision was reached. I'm
guessing that we'll probably see something to that effect in one of the
tech updates in SportsCar soon.
