I can't speak for the Porsche club, but I know the BMW club goes to great
lengths to satisfy the insurance requirements to allow coverage at these
schools. They'll quite literally kick someone out who's timing laps. And
although it can be fun to see if your 2002 can keep up with an M3 in the
twisties (no chance on the straightaway, unless you've got an M2002), with
such tightly controlled passing it really isn't much of a race, either - nor
is it supposed to be.
As for autox, although the speeds are far lower, since it is not only timed,
it's intended to be a competition, I'd think it more likely for insurance to
not cover an autox than a school based on that technicality. Mileage
varies - some insurance covers autox and not schools, some covers it all,
some covers nothing (makes you wonder why we gotta pay for it...) :)
