Well, it wouldn't exactly be PC for a major newspaper to be in favor of
"civilians" taking their cars on the track, then hitting up insurance
companies for money, would it? :)

Seriously, though, what you say is correct - while it is true that it was a
single car accident on a private way, this isn't exactly full disclosure.
Plus the guy tried to milk a bit more money out of them, which caused them
to discover him in the first place. The majority of us who participate in
these schools would come clean with our insurance companies in the event of
an accident. I know of some people who have received legitimate insurance
claims while being entirely honest with their insurance companies. BMW CCA
in particular makes a major effort to allow their schools to be, well,
schools, not races. They'll kick people out that they catch with a
stopwatch.

But we're a bunch of speed nuts anyway - I'm just preaching to the choir
here. :) Problem is, a high profile case like this could significantly
impact insurance coverage for the rest of us. Yes, the guy lied, and
screwed himself in the process. But this casts a bad image on the rest of
us who want to do these events legitimately, and ultimately it may be us who
get screwed in the end for this guy's mistake. That's why this case
deserves our consideration - not because he committed fraud, but because he
could easily ruin the fun for the rest of us.
