This SP turbo rule change is ridiculous. Where did the proposal and time
for member comment go?
I've read all the posts so far, and there's been a lot of talk about
horsepower and boost, but it's all irrelevant (plus a few good points). The
update/backdate allowance for turbos should stand as current.
The turbo is NOT part of the engine. It is part of the intake and exhaust
systems, and these are free in SP.
With the current rules, the turbo can only be updated/backdated in rare
instances where it is nearly a direct bolt-on. It is legal for the DSM's
because it bolts directly to the stock exhaust manifold, and the stock,
pre-95 oil/coolant lines can be used. The requirements of the
update/backdate rule already prohibit turbo changes that are beyond the
spirit of the rules (i.e. the Trans-Am turbo on an LS1 that someone
mentioned). The DSM's use the same 2.0L engine with slightly different
compression ratio and heads. It's not like we're trying to use a turbo that
was designed for a larger motor or for a car in a different class.
Also, the turbo update/backdate ban has nothing to do with boost creep -
that's a separate issue.
The turbo update/backdate has been legal, and there has yet to be a problem
associated with it. If it becomes one, reclass the car! Why change it and
make all of us spend the time/money to put the stock turbo back on?
