Well, for starters, the fact that it's *part* of the bodyshell rather than
simply attached to it -- this spreads the load into the entire shell.  While
it's not impossible to collapse a fixed roof, it's far less likely than
collapsing a less rigid removeable roof attached to the body with a
half-dozen or ten fasteners.
